UNDATED (AP) — Florida made a massive jump in The Associated Press Top 25 and landed in the top 10 for the first time in five years. The Gators’ 24-point win over Mississippi on Saturday earned them a 13-rung promotion to No. 8. That's their highest ranking since 2020 and first top-10 appearance since 2021. Texas, Georgia and Notre Dame continued to hold the top three spots, Miami was a season-high No. 4 and Ohio State moved up two spots to No. 5. Indiana, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi and BYU completed the top 10. The Longhorns received 62 of 70 first-place votes.
UNDATED (AP) — Florida not only would be on the 12-team College Football Playoff bracket for the first time based on The Associated Press Top 25, the Gators would host a first-round game. First-year coach Jon Sumrall’s team zoomed up 13 spots to No. 8 in the poll. That would give the Gators the last home-field spot and the Southeastern Conference a total of six teams in the field. Texas, Georgia, Notre Dame and Miami would be the top four seeds and Ohio State, Indiana, Alabama and Florida would host first-round games.
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina coach Shane Beamer announced edge rusher Dylan Stewart has been suspended indefinitely after throwing a punch at an Alabama player in Saturday night's game at Alabama. Stewart was called for a personal foul after he punched Alabama tight end Josh Ford in the helmet in the fourth quarter of the Gamecocks’ 49-18 loss. Beamer said he would make a decision early this week about when, and if, Stewart would return. Stewart has been ruled out of this week's home game against No. 24 Kentucky.
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — LSU senior linebacker and defensive captain Whit Weeks has a broken lower right leg that will sideline him indefinitely, but not necessarily for the rest of the season. Weeks left Saturday night’s 35-6 victory over Texas A&M in a walking boot during the second half. Coach Lane Kiffin said Sunday that he expected to know by Monday whether Weeks was expected back late in the season or not at all. Weeks is one of several prominent players who’ve been injured during the first month of the season for LSU.
MEDINAH, Ill. (AP) — Jackson Koivun looked quite comfortable in his Presidents Cup debut. More like a seasoned veteran than the youngest player on the U.S. team. The 21-year-old Koivun defeated Si Woo Kim 2 up in singles, part of an epic rally for the Americans in a 17-13 victory over the International squad. The former Auburn star went 2-0-1 in his three matches at Medinah Country Club in suburban Chicago. U.S. captain Brandt Snedeker says Koivun is special. Koivun led the Tigers to the NCAA title in June. Almost two months later, the California native won the 3M Open in his third professional start.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Texas linebacker Justin Cryer hasn’t seen anything like what Longhorns edge rusher Colin Simmons did Saturday. Simmons had the first sack in the first quarter for top-ranked Texas against No. 14 Tennessee. He had another in the second quarter. Simmons then had sacks on back-to-back plays in the third quarter. His final sack came in the fourth forcing a punt that led to the clinching touchdown drive for a big 20-17 win on the road. Simmons tied the program record with five sacks in a single game. Simmons also drew a big penalty for how he celebrated one sack that had him apologizing after the game.
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables says there were discussions about benching quarterback John Mateer at halftime in the Sooners’ 41-13 loss to No. 2 Georgia. Mateer turned the ball over on three consecutive drives in the second quarter, helping Georgia to a 28-0 lead by halftime. He finished the game with two touchdowns, an interception and two lost fumbles. Offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle says they considered all options, but felt Mateer was still the best choice. Mateer has committed six turnovers in the last three games, raising questions about his confidence and recent performance. Oklahoma, ranked No. 10 in the AP's preseason poll, has a bye week before facing No. 1 Texas.
