BERLIN – Last week featured two long and challenging meets for Cambridge-South Dorchester High School’s track and field team, with some promising results.

On Tuesday at Stephen Decatur, the boys took on the 3A home team and seven other squads, beating them all. The Vikes ended up with 159.5 points for first place, while Decatur landed in second with 145.5.

Other men’s results were James M. Bennett (3A) 110.5, Wicomico (2A) 104.5, Parkside (2A) 93, Northampton 57, Salisbury Christian 10, Arcadia 6, and Holly Grove 3.

For the women, Bennett won with 171.5, followed by the Lady Vikings with 142.5. Decatur was third with 92, Wicomico 88.5, Parkside 57, Holly Grove 50, Arcadia 46.5, Northampton 11 and Salisbury Christian 1.

The C-SD girls’ depth is what carried them as high as second – a Lady Viking placed first in just one event, the 400-meter dash, but the squad racked up points as they placed second through eighth throughout the meet.

In the 400, Janee’ Quailes crossed the line first for 10 points, completing the lap in 1:02.10. Freshman Ronke Oyerinde was three ticks behind for third and 6 points, in 1:05.80, while junior Leah Krotee placed sixth in 1:08 flat for 3 points.

C-SD women also won pole vault, as sophomore Destiny Frantum cleared 7 feet for second place and 8 points, with teammate and freshman Sarah Condon reaching 6’ 6” for a personal record, fourth place and 5 points.

The men were powerful throughout, with the usual C-SD domination in the 800-meter run, as Trevor Goodwin grabbed first in 2:03.60, followed by sophomore Connor McCroy in 2:06.70, and Carson Taylor in fourth place in a time of 2:13.20. Carson also earned a coveted unofficial title among runners, as he joined the “Sub-5 16 Club,” meaning he finished the 1,600-meter run in under 5 minutes – 4:54.50 in this case.

Senior Jimmy Schulze also accepted the congratulations of his teammates after he placed second in the long jump, shattering a personal record in the process. Schulze came into the meet with a best jump of 17’ 8”, and rode home with a new mark of 18’ 11”.

On Saturday, it was all hands on deck at Oh Dark Thirty, with the team needing to be on the road to Forestville in Price George’s County by 5:30 a.m. The sleepy crew made it on board, and got underway to the Mustang Invitational at Bishop McNamara High School.

It was a day of very tough competition against more than 30 schools with excellent programs, all conducted in cool temperatures and a steady rain for 11 hours.

The point? To give the athletes a look at some of the most successful high school track and field athletes, and to show the Vikings some of what it takes to reach that level.

The boys earned 13 points to land in 23rd place out of 36 teams, with the girls scoring 1 point for 30th of 30. T.C. Williams won the men’s competition with 56 points, and the women’s with 77.5.
