SNOW HILL — At the first meet of the winter track and field season at Snow Hill High School on Dec. 6, the athletes and coaches of Cambridge-South Dorchester High School’s team were ready to run, jump and throw in competition with teams from throughout Delmarva.

Parkside High School won the meet with 86.5 points, followed by Maryland schools Kent Island, third, 59; North Caroline, fourth, 54; Bennett, sixth, 31; Crisfield, eighth, 23; Wicomico High School, ninth, 23; Stephen Decatur, eleventh, 17; Snow Hill, twelfth, 16; Mardela, thirteenth, 11; and Easton, fifteenth, 6.

The Viking boys got off to a slow start to the 2017-18 campaign, placing 16th of 16 scoring teams, though C-SD’s coaches had taken out for rest their top runner, Connor McCroy.

For the girls, Kent Island won with 72 points. They were followed by Maryland schools North Caroline, second, 62; James M. Bennett, third, 51; Parkside, fourth, 48; C-SD, eighth, 33.5; Queen Anne’s County, 29; Snow Hill, 27; Stephen Decatur, 11th, 20; Wicomico, 12th, 17; Easton, 13th, 6; Kent County, 15th, 4; and Washington, 16th, 4.

Thirteen events are scored at the meets, fewer than in outdoor track and field in the spring. The track events are the runs and sprints of 55 meters, 300 meters, 500 meters, 800 meters, 1,600-meters, and 3,200 meters; the 55-meter hurdles; and relays of 4x200 meters, 4x400 meters, and 4x800.

The field events are the high jump, pole vault and shot put.

C-SD’s coaches were pleased with the Vikings’ performances, considering that the first meet is always a learning experience for the rookies.

Unlike outdoor, spring track and field, when there is more than enough room for any number of teams in a stadium, during the winter season, teams are assigned spaces in the infield, as hundreds of athletes and coaches find their areas and begin listening for announcments of events about to begin.

Schools from Maryland, Delaware and Virginia attend the meets at Worcester County Recreation Center, the only indoor track and field venue in the region. Meets are held at Snow Hill every Wednesday, beginning at 2 p.m.
