Robin Hood Shop marks 62nd birthday

Posted

CAMBRIDGE — The Robin Hood Shop, located at 416 High St. in Cambridge, celebrated its 62nd birthday on March 19. Spring and summer clothing, jewelry, linens, furniture, and other household items were featured. The shop was closed on Saturday, and Monday, to restock and reorganize for this event.

The shop’s purpose has remained the same over the years — to reduce the clutter in homes and return these same items back into service for those who need them. The backbone of this enterprise is the dedicated volunteers, who are members of the Dorchester General Hospital Auxiliary of Dorchester General Hospital and work under direction the shop manager, Cathy Gullion.

Profits from the shop help to benefit the programs, equipment, services, and patient care at the University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Dorchester.

The store was opened on March 17, 1957 by an Auxiliary Committee with the goal of raising funds for the construction of a new emergency department for the local hospital. The Auxiliary raised $16,000 in its first two years of operation, and after 62 years, the total amount has grown to over $1.3 million.

Local and state dignitaries were invited to join the shop volunteers and customers at 1 p.m. when refreshments were served.

The Robin Hood Shop’s hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Community members interested in volunteering at the shop may contact Ms. Gullion at 410-228-6339.
