CAMBRIDGE — On June 24, the Choptank River Lighthouse in Cambridge held a reception to mark the opening of its first-ever temporary exhibit, “View from the Lighthouse: The Underground Railroad.” The exhibit looks at views from the deck of the lighthouse in four different directions and discusses how each relates to key moments in the lives of Harriet Tubman and several other Underground Railroad figures.

The reception drew an estimated 200 visitors, far exceeding expectations.

“It’s really a testament to the continued growth of interest in the stories our county have to tell about the Underground Railroad,” said Jim Duffy, executive director of the Cambridge Lighthouse Foundation.

The exhibit will remain on display through October. Located at Long Wharf Park, the Choptank River Lighthouse is open to visitors daily between 9am and 6pm. They exhibit is housed on the upper floor of the lighthouse, atop a circular staircase. The first floor has permanent exhibits and artifacts focused on the history of the original Choptank River Lighthouse that once stood at the mouth of the Tred Avon River.
