CAMBRIDGE – A Nanjemoy man has been charged with attempted murder after a stabbing Friday.

At approximately 2:49 a.m. Dec. 15, Cambridge Police Department officers responded to the Holiday Inn located in the 2700 block of Ocean Gateway in reference to a stabbing. Officers located two injured men in the lobby of the hotel.

Riayn Michael Safran, 36 years old of Westminster, was observed to be bleeding profusely from the neck. Further assessment showed that he had stab wounds to the abdomen, ear/neck, left shoulder and left arm. Safran was treated by Dorchester County EMS and transported to Tidal Health Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury for further treatment.

Safran stated to officers that he and the other man were wrestling and that the other subject stabbed him for no reason.

Officers contacted the other subject, a 38-year-old man from Nanjemoy. As officers approached him, he was observed to pull a knife from his pocket and throw it to the ground, a statement from the CPD said.

The knife was found to have blood on it. The man reported to officers that an argument ensued between himself and Safran, whom he claimed started to strangle him. The man said the first argument ended, and afterward when Safran began to advance toward him, the stabbing occurred.

Officers observed that the suspect also had injuries to his face and head. He was also treated by EMS and transported to Tidal Health in Salisbury.

Officers continued their investigation and located blood on the elevator and on the second-story floor hallway leading to the subjects’ rented room. Officers also located surveillance cameras in the area which recorded the altercation.

Video footage showed both men in the hallway with the suspect returning to the room and Safran following him. Both subjects appeared to be agitated.

At the entrance to the room, a fight ensued, and the suspect was pulled into the hallway holding a knife. The suspect was observed making several stabbing motions at Safran.

Safran then threw the suspect to the ground, striking him several times and getting on top of him. The suspect is then observed stabbing Safran in the neck, the CPD statement said. Safran then grabbed the suspect’s arms, pinning them to the ground and striking him again in the head and grabbing his neck before backing off.

Safran then made his way to the stairwell to the front lobby to request assistance. The suspect went back to the rented room, where he called down to the lobby to request assistance.

CPD detectives responded to assist with the investigation while other CPD officers responded to Tidal Health. Officers completed an application of charges on Ridgeway. Officers have also completed an application of charges on Safran.

After the suspect was released from Tidal Health, he was placed under arrest and transported to CPD for processing and later turned over to the Dorchester County Department of Corrections on a temporary commitment.

Daniel Wayne Ridgeway was charged with:

  • Attempted 1st degree murder
  • Attempted 2nd degree murder
  • Assault 1st degree
  • Assault 2nd degree
  • Reckless endangerment
  • Dangerous weapon intent to injure
