'Mamma Mia!' entertains with tears, cheers and laughter

CAMBRIDGE – From March 21-24, the Cambridge-South Dorchester High School Theater Department delighted audiences and demonstrated that musical theater is alive and well with their performances of "Mamma Mia!" C-SD has a long history of successful shows and this group of young people under the direction of Jay Plummer was no exception.

Mr. Plummer was joined by Paula Barnes, Bethany Earing and Andrea Milito who helped students shine with amazing sets, costumes and musical direction.

"Mamma Mia!" is the story of a girl, Sophie (Isabelle Hughes) who is figuring out who she is just before her wedding to Sky (Nicholas Cristia). She finds her mother, Donna’s (Shamara Cephas) diary which lists Sophie’s possible dads (Sam- Jaden Davis, Bill- Jamya Bryan, and Harry- Jake Wroten) who unbeknownst to her mom Sophie invites to the wedding.

This heartwarming story is enhanced by the music of Abba and had audiences laughing and crying just minutes apart. Donna’s besties (Tanya - Christina Hyde and Rosie - Max Miller) come to support the very confused Donna and Sophie’s friends (Ali - Jade Bryant and Lisa - Zye’Meria Pinder) and Sky’s friends (Eddie - Jewel White and Pepper - Cheyenne Jackson) add to the chaos and fun.

The show would not have been complete without the hard work of the rest of the cast and crew (DonShay Payton, Ke’Shandra Elliott, Adriana Brito, Tyasia Thompson, Madison Brown, Kennedy Roberts, Lilly Knight, London Boyd, Keyana Morris and Jay’Mir Cooper). For the first time, students from Eastern Shore Dance Academy (Savannah Elzey-Assistant Choreographer, Charlotte Pliescott, Kaitlin Maschauer, Mariah Shorter, Ava Nguyen, Julia Radcliffe, Kayleigh True, Lana Beletsky and Madelyn Hall) joined the cast to enhance the choreography of Jessica Hindman.

The cast and crew are incredibly grateful for the help and support of the administration, staff and students of C-SD, parents, and community businesses. We are looking forward to entertaining our audiences again next year. If you are interested in volunteering in future years, please contact the theater department at C-SD.
