SALISBURY – It’s good to see all those years of training pay off.

Not only does the effort and sweat keep an athlete healthy, but the participation of runners from Cambridge Multi-Sport Club (CMS) in the Tim Kennard 10-Mile River Run and 5K Run/Walk supported a number of charities.

About a dozen members, most from Dorchester County, headed to Salisbury on Saturday to take part in the annual event. Cindy Gilbert was particularly pleased with the day’s highlights, which included not only her 39th wedding anniversary, but also a first-place finish in her age group in the 10-mile race.

Tim Kennard, then 48, succumbed to cancer in 2004, but not before he asked that a run/walk be held in his honor to help children and animals. The registration fees of competitors form part of that support, as the annual event has now been held for more than a decade.

The race’s website said, “This year, the proceeds will help: Coastal Hospice, specifically for pediatric cases and programs for grieving children who have lost a sibling or a parent to cancer; the Salisbury Horizons Student Enriching Program, which provides support, education and hope to children from economically disadvantaged families; Coalition of Caring, a fund for our animal friends in need; also, VSCOA PAWS, which is the first-ever program of its kind to train disabled, homeless veterans to train homeless rescue dogs to become service dogs.”
