Hands-on art at DCA

Dorchester Center for the Arts maintains a full schedule of instructional arts classes in a variety of mediums as well as special workshops and concerts. Numerous opportunities await to learn something new this winter, enhance existing skills, or experience a performance. Visit DCA online for complete schedule: www.dorchesterarts.org. The following classes are now open for registration.


• Beginner’s Wheel / Instructor: Robert Gladney
Learn the basic tools and techniques needed to throw a variety of vessels on a pottery wheel. Participants will create cylinders and bowls, learn the fundamentals of making more complex projects, and glaze their own works. Class includes all tools and materials. Students should have trimmed fingernails and dress to get messy! Open to ages 16 and up. $145 DCA Members, $180 Non-Members. 6- Week Session: Wednesdays, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m., Feb. 20 – March 27.


• Knitting for Everyone / Instructor: Windy Karpavage
Beginning to experienced knitters are welcome. Each knitter will create beautiful projects using patterns purchased in class or on custom projects under the direction of the instructor. Supply prices vary based on project selection, $50-$200/project. Quality matters – all supplies are purchased through the instructor to ensure student’s success. Stuck on a project and need help? Drop in on the 1st Wednesday of every session to have questions answered by an experienced instructor. Learn tips and tricks to take projects to the next level. DCA Members, $125 Future Members. Supply fee payable to instructor. 6-Week Session: Wednesday evenings, 6 – 8 p.m. Feb. 20 – April 3. Drop-Ins Welcome: $15 Per Class Members, $22 Future Members.


• Introduction to Watercolor / Instructor: Diana Evans
Students will learn basic techniques such as setting up a palette, mixing colors, brush stroke, and more. Students will experiment with several techniques and produce a finished painting. No experience necessary. Supply list available at DCA. $90 DCA Members, $135 Future Members. 4-Week Session: Thursday Afternoons, 1:30 – 4 p.m. Feb. 21 – March 14.


• Principles of Ceramics: Hand building and Coil Pots / Instructor: Robert Gladney
This class is for students at all levels, beginner through advanced, adults and teens (16 and up). Students will learn to form works by hand, select and apply glazes and experiment with firing techniques. Instruction is provided at the level of the individual student and is given in a relaxed and creative environment. Discover the exciting medium of clay! All materials are provided. Please wear or bring a change of clothes suitable for messy work. $130 DCA Members, $165 Future Members. 6-Week Session: Saturdays, 10 a.m. – noon, March 2 -April 6.


Save the Date: March 2 Harp Concert
Kara Dahl Russell returns to the Gallery Stage on March 2 at 2 p.m. for a performance entitled “Love of Lever Harp.” The lever harp is also known as the folk harp or Celtic harp. The concert is free, $10 donation welcome. Please reserve your spot by calling DCA at 410-228-7782.
