CAMBRIDGE – Half a year and many miles later, the Groove City Trekkers are celebrating success in their efforts to promote fitness and civil rights among African-American women and girls.

“Never a dull moment with these ladies. We celebrate our six-month anniversary as girltrekkers, end of summer, Christmas celebration and here’s to 2018,” member Dormaim Green said on social media. “I am so grateful for the opportunity to be among great people who are now great friends.”

A group of Dorchester County women took the girltrek pledge on June 10 to live the best and healthiest lives they could. They took their inspiration from the national movement GirlTrek, the largest public health non-profit organization for African-American women and girls in the United States.

“With nearly 100,000 neighborhood walkers, GirlTrek encourages women to use walking as a practical first step to inspire healthy living, families, and communities,” a statement from the group said. “As women organize walking teams, they mobilize community members to support monthly advocacy efforts and lead a civil rights-inspired health movement.”

Beyond walking, GirlTrek’s active members advocate an increase in physical activity through walking, improving access to safe places to walk, protecting and reclaiming green spaces, and improving the walkability and built environments of 50 high-need communities across the United States.

“GirlTrek’s mission is to inspire one million African-American women and girls to develop a daily habit of walking,” the statement said.
