CAMBRIDGE — Though the U.S. Census Bureau won’t record its information until next year, a drive is already under way to hire workers.

Every 10 years, the bureau gathers extensive data on the population, used for a variety of purposes. Because that aspect of the job occurs only once a decade, there is a need for many employees.

Conae Jackson was at the Central Library on Friday, distributing information to prospective workers. “It’s a temporary position lasting until the end of 2020,” she said.
The pay is $18.50 an hour. Employees are paid weekly, a statement from the bureau said, and will receive their first paycheck 10-14 days after their first day of work.

An accurate and full count is important for any state or local area. “The census determines funding,” Ms. Jackson said.

It can take some expertise and determination to get the facts, though. Not everyone lives in easily accessible places, and sometimes it takes a trusted local to get folks to open up about, for instance, how many persons live in a home.

“From determining the number of seats each state has in the U.S. House of Representatives to planning for roads, schools, and hospitals, an accurate count is crucial,” the statement said. “You can help to ensure that your community is properly represented.”
