Cambridge Creek bridge work postponed

Posted

CAMBRIDGE — Work scheduled Dec. 4-8 on the Maryland Avenue drawbridge over Cambridge Creek has been postponed. The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will reschedule this work and provide advance notice when they have the new dates.

As previously mentioned, this work involves the replacement of a gear in the bridge operating mechanism and replacement of a steel plate on the bridge deck. Currently, it appears that all components necessary for the gear replacement may not be available in time to complete the work as advertised by Dec. 8.

If MDOT were to proceed now with the deck plate replacement, an extended closure or a second closure might be necessary to complete the gear work. SHA would prefer not to take this risk — commitment to motorists and Cambridge residents and businesses is that it will minimize public impacts by consolidating these repairs into one condensed closure period.

SHA will honor this commitment and reschedule the work when they are confident that both repairs can be performed under the same closure and prior to the peak boating/travel season. As always, should any emergency repair become necessary they will take appropriate steps to ensure public safety.
