Auto Zone employee run over during car theft in Cambridge

Posted

CAMBRIDGE – On July 13, at approximately 5:45 p.m., Cambridge Police Department officers responded to Auto Zone in reference to a shoplifting incident. While officers were enroute, they were informed that the female suspect had stolen a vehicle that was in the parking lot and, while attempting to escape, had run over and injured an employee.

The employee reported having been alerted to shoplifting committed by the woman, who had concealed merchandise worth $201.35 and was attempting to leave the store. The employee confronted the woman, who dropped the items and fled from the store.

She entered a white 2000 Oldsmobile Alero parked outside of the store where the owner had it running while he was out of the vehicle talking. The employee attempted to prevent the suspect from leaving in the car, but the woman entered it and drove off at high speed.

This caused the employee to be dragged 10-15 feet and run over. The employee was transported to the University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Cambridge for treatment.

The vehicle owner’s sister told officers there was a vehicle tracking system on the car, which was shown in the 500 block of Edgeweood Avenue. CPD officers converged on the area and observed the vehicle parked on the side of the road.

As they approached, the driver saw the marked patrol vehicle and fled at high speed. Officers pursued the vehicle through multiple streets, as the driver disregarded traffic laws and orders to stop.

As the car approached High Street and Bradley Avenue at high speed, the driver jumped out and tried to run, but was quickly apprehended after being warned that a K9 would be deployed. The vehicle continued to travel down the street unoccupied, striking a residence in the 1100 block of High Street, causing minor damage to the home and no injuries to the occupant.

The suspect said that she had just swallowed a quantity of cocaine. Officers immediately transported her to UMSMC for treatment.

Kavisha Ashley Brown, 33 years old of Cambridge, was found to have multiple warrants for her arrest from multiple counties. After being released from UMSMC, Brown was transported to CPD for processing and her initial appearance. She was later turned over to the Dorchester County Department of Corrections on no bond. Brown was charged with:

  • Assault 1st degree
  • Assault 2nd degree
  • Motor vehicle unlawful taking
  • Burglary 4th degree theft
  • Theft $100 to under $
  • Attempt by driver to elude uniformed police by failing to stop
  • Attempt by driver to elude police in official police vehicle by failing to stop
  • Failure to stop after accident involving damage to attended property
  • Failure to return and remain at scene of accident
  • Multiple other traffic violations to include speed violations, stop sign violations, driving the wrong way on a roadway, red light violations, negligent driving and reckless driving

Warrant #1: Dorchester County District Court Arrest Warrant through Cambridge Police Department.

  • Theft less Than $100
  • Assault 1st degree
  • Assault 2nd degree
  • Reckless endangerment

Charges stem from an incident that occurred June 19, when a victim reported that the suspect had taken her cell phone on June 15 and, on June 19, had returned to the residence. While at the home, the suspect allegedly attacked the victim by placing her knee on her chest and strangled.

Warrant #2: Talbot County District Court Bench Warrant for Violation of Probation on May 17, 2022, on an original charge of CDS possession not cannabis.

Warrant #3: Queen Anne’s County District Court Bench Warrant for Violation of Probation on June 9 on an original charge of motor vehicle unlawful taking. Warrant was used as a detainer, as Brown will have to return to Queen Anne’s County.

Additional charges are pending on Brown, due to her suspected involvement in multiple other burglaries, thefts and robberies in Dorchester County and Talbot County.
