CAMBRIDGE — On Saturday, April 22, the Spocott Windmill Foundation will be dedicating the newly-named Adaline Wheatley House as a part of the Spocott Windmill Complex. Adaline, born Adaline Morris, a free black, lived her entire life on the Spocott Farm property, serving as cook, nurse, and house manager at Spocott. Renowned for both her cooking and wisdom, dispensed to all who entered her kitchen, she and her husband Columbus, a freed slave and Civil War veteran, raised their family of seven in this house.

In the 1920s, she was featured on the cover of a brochure/cookbook put out by the Delmarva Cooking Association, and her recipes were distributed nationally. As a highlight of the day, “Adaline” will be present to share her many stories and opinions. The Spocott Windmill Foundation is also currently looking for individuals who might be descended from her.

The dedication is part of the Spocott Earth Day Celebration, a day of environmental and historical activities at the Spocott Windmill near Cambridge, from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Activities will include the running of the windmill (weather permitting) and tours of all the buildings in the windmill complex including the Windmill, Adaline Wheatley House, Castle Haven Schoolhouse, Blacksmith Shop, Country Store and Museum, and the partially renovated 19th Century Doctor’s Office. They will also be unveiling the first round of displays for these buildings. Other ongoing activities during the day will include numerous activities for children in the old schoolhouse, food, and live music.

The day will also feature the Arbor Day tree giveaway sponsored by the Dorchester County Forestry Board. The Spocott Windmill Foundation and DCPG will sponsor a horseshoe tournament for teams representing community service organizations.
