DOVER — The woman killed in a Sunday car crash in Bear was a Delaware State University student.

The university sent out an email to its community, informing them Thalya Crawford, 20, had been killed. She was a passenger in a car of four Delaware State students that struck another vehicle Sunday.

A vigil was scheduled to be held by the Campus Activities Board for Ms. Crawford, a Brooklyn, New York, resident.

According to Delaware State Police, the accident occurred at about 10:15 a.m. Sunday. Kai Clarke, 20, of Brooklyn, New York, was driving a 2003 Ford Explorer on Del. 1 when he tried to pass a 2006 GMC Yukon being driven by Smyrna resident Brett Yarnall, 31.

Police spokesman Sgt. Richard Bratz said Mr. Clarke lost control of the Explorer and struck the Yukon, causing both cars to travel southwest and strike the guardrail.

The Explorer went through it and down an embankment before resting on the driver’s side, while the Yukon rolled over the guardrail and landed on its roof.

Only the driver of the Explorer was restrained. Ms. Crawford was pronounced dead at the scene, while Mr. Clarke, 20-year-old Dover resident Armani Wynter and 20-year-old Gerell Wilson of Newark were taken to Christiana Hospital Trauma Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Ms. Yarnall and her 9-month-old daughter were taken to the center and released.

Sgt. Bratz said speed and aggressive driving by Mr. Clarke may have caused the accident and police are continuing their investigation to determine if charges will be filed.

The southbound lanes of Del. 1 were restricted to one lane for three hours while the scene was cleared.

Delaware State officials could not be reached for comment.
