GEORGETOWN — Timaun Williams is comfortable being one of the smaller players on the football field.

And on Friday night, he was the one with the most touchdowns.

Williams scored three touchdowns and fellow running back Pat Griffin added two of his own as Sussex Tech ran its way to a 42-27 victory over Dover High in Henlopen Conference Northern Division action.

Williams, who says he’s about 150 pounds, recorded 147 rushing yards.

“Coach always says run with a purpose and that’s what I do,” Williams said. “I got to run like I’m big. It’s not about the size, it’s all about the heart.”

The victory moved Sussex Tech to 7-1 overall as the Ravens try to make the Division I state tournament for the second straight year. They are 4-1 in the Henlopen North, in second place.

Dover dropped to 3-5 overall and 1-3 in the Henlopen North, but Sussex Tech coach Mark Quillin wasn’t taking the Senators lightly coming into this matchup.

“I was worried about them all week long,” Quillin said. “Their quarterback (Triston Harris) is the best in the state, in my opinion. I thought they would give us a lot of problems defensively, to be honest.”

Quillin’s fears about Harris were well-founded. The senior passed for 197 yards for the Senators, rushed for a score and threw a touchdown to John Rodel Castro.

But Williams and Griffin also made key plays on the defensive side as each had an interception. Williams’ pick came in the first quarter and set up Griffin’s first touchdown to open the scoring, while Griffin had an interception on the goal-line in the fourth quarter to seal it.

The Ravens used two scores in 20 seconds to build a two-touchdown lead toward the end of the second quarter that they maintained throughout the second half.

Justin Hill connected with Justin Hill for a 16-yard touchdown before the Ravens recovered the ensuining kickoff. Kicker Kyle Lux caused a fumble when he rocketed the ball into the Dover player closest to him and Orlando Kelley pounced on it for Sussex Tech.

“We were trying to squib quick but as a soccer player he hits the ball so hard,” Quillin said. “I’ll rather be lucky than good sometimes. He hit that ball just right.”

Two plays later Wiliams rushed for his first touchdown on a 35-yard run. It allowed Sussex Tech to take a 22-7 lead into halftime.

“When we had that kickoff recovered it was such a momentum shift toward us,” Williams said.

Everyone in the Raven backfield had a big day.

Griffin finished with 120 yards to go along with his two touchdowns. While Isaiah Brown didn’t score he still earned 98 yards on the ground.

“That helps out tremendously and the offensive line does a tremendous line,” Griffin said.

Jerry Warren scored a pair of rushing touchdowns for Dover’s first two touchdowns.

Dover closed within two touchdowns twice in the second half but Williams scored Tech’s final two touchdowns of the game. The first was from 16 yards out before he scampered 32 yards down the left sideline while keeping his feet inbounds for the Ravens’ final touchdown.

“He’s such a small kid but he runs the ball so tough,” Quillin said. “He’s a special kid. He does some great things for us.”
