Three seek appointment to two Indian River school board seats

Posted

SELBYVILLE — The Indian River School District board of education Monday will consider appointing two of three candidates to fill both vacant District 1 terms through June 30.

These appointments surfaced when both 1st District members, Madeline Moses and James Fritz, moved out of its boundaries and had to resign.

“They moved out of their (district) within the school district. They had to resign their seats. That happened at the last school board meeting in January,” said Indian River spokesperson David Maull.

Seeking to fill the seats for the next four months are Lisa Hudson Briggs, Kelly Kline and Son-Djerry Cameus. They applied to do so prior to the Feb. 16 deadline.

At Monday’s meeting, the three will address the board, which will then choose two of them to serve through June.

Coinciding with this is the May 14 school board election, when both District 1 seats will be available.

“That’s a whole separate thing," said Mr. Maull, noting anyone who wants to run .for District 1 will have to file by Friday, March 1. The only one to have done so, as of Tuesday, was Mr. Cameus.

Four other board seats are up for grabs in 2024, those of Dr. Heather Statler (District 3) and Dr. Donald Hattier (District 4), and Kimberly Taylor and Derek Cathell (both District 5). Those who have filed to run, as of Tuesday, were incumbents Dr. Statler, Ms. Taylor and Mr. Cathell, plus Joshua W. Hudson for the 4th District.

The 1st District winners in the May vote will serve out the rest of the four-year terms, July 1, 2024, through June 30, 2025. In the 2025 election, candidates will be running for the standard four-year stint.

Mr. Maull said this unusual occurrence can be somewhat confusing.

“It’s kind of a weird situation in that these individuals are seeking the appointment. If they want to continue on the board after June 30, they would have to file for election and run in the school board election,” he said. “The timing of the resignations makes it a little complex.”
