Sussex Master Gardeners announce upcoming sessions

GEORGETOWN — The Sussex County Master Gardeners will hold several workshops in the winter and spring.

The winter classes will be held via Zoom. The spring sessions will be held both in person and virtually. They are free, but registration is required at pcsreg.com.

Emails to registrants with Zoom links/phone numbers and handouts will be delivered 24 hours before scheduled workshops. In-person events will be held at the Carvel Research and Education Center, 16483 County Seat Highway, Georgetown.

  • “Renovating Your Garden” will be held at 7 p.m. Feb. 21 with Master Gardeners Ana Dittel and Linda Peters.
  • The Master Gardeners Program will be held at 7 p.m. March 7. Presenters will discuss who Master Gardeners are, the training program, volunteer opportunities and the application process.
  • “Lawn Care: Best Practices for Delaware” will be held at 1 p.m. March 28. Master Gardener Judy Pfister will discuss the best procedures for transition zone weather, including soil testing, grass types, turf grass seed selection, mowing height, watering and fertilization. Soil test kits will be available, and there is a charge of $17 for the test when the sample is submitted.
  • “Victory Gardens” will be held at 1 p.m. April 18 with Master Gardener Bunnie Williams. Victory gardens were planted during the World Wars to ensure an adequate food supply for civilians and troops.
  • “Hydrangeas for Delaware” will be held at 1 p.m. May 9. Master Gardener and University of Delaware communications specialist Michele Walfred will share which of 102 hydrangeas performed well in her landscape and the lessons she learned from those that did not. Explore more about native varieties gaining popularity and examine the sun, shade and pruning requirements of the many hydrangeas available on the market.
  • “Garden Smart/Garden Easy” will be held at 1 p.m. May 25. Master Gardener Susan Trone will explain what tools and techniques are available for gardeners who are aging or developing mobility issues.
