Smyrna High outscored Polytech by two goals in the fourth quarter to pick up a 10-8 victory over the Panthers in Henlopen Conference Northern Division boys’ lacrosse on Monday afternoon.

Joseph Russillo, Luke Russillo (2 assists), Jake Kaiser and Matthew Sarkissian all netted two goals for the Eagles, who outscored the Panthers, 4-2, in the final period, Jacob Soroko and Ethan Kochis had Smyrna’s other goals while Shane Helm made seven saves.

The Eagles (2-3 North, 9-4 overall), who won their fifth game in a row, outshot Polytech, 46-29.

For the Panthers, Jared Wagenhoffer tallied three goals while Zachary Trabaudo and Zachary Maheu had two apiece. Jeremy Armann added Polytech’s other goal.

Dover 17, Red Lion Christian 4: The Senators improved to 8-5 with their second straight win.

Milford 10, Caravel 6: Milford built a 10-4 advantage after three quarters before holding off Caravel to improve to 11-0.

Mathew Viramontes (1 assist) had four goals with Dallas Rhodes adding three. Zachary Heesh had two goals, Tyler Millman had one and Clay Stevenson made nine saves.

Wilmington Friends 12, Sussex Tech 8: The Quakers built a three-goal lead before holding off the Ravens.

Sussex Tech (9-4), which had a six-game winning streak snapped, was paced by Matt Tull (3 goals, 1 assist). Five other players had one goal each for the Ravens, who outshot Friends, 24-13.

Conrad 13, St. Thomas More 4: William Thomas netted three goals for the Ravens in their loss.

Akhil Patel also scored a goal while Jon Titus made 10 saves.

GIRLS, Cape Henlopen 15, Sussex Tech 1: Sarah Tappen had six goals and two assists to pace the Vikings, who led 10-1 at halftime.

Lexi Woodruff (4 goals, 1 assist) and Lizzie Frederick (3 goals, 3 assists) were also multiple goal-scorers for Cape, which outshot the Ravens, 28-15. Izzy Cryne made seven saves while Sam Broadhurst made five for the Vikings.

Victoria Lockwood netted the lone goal for Sussex Tech while Heather Windels made six saves.

Girls’ soccer

Caesar Rodney 9, St. Andrew’s 1: Aleya Cummings netted four goals to pace the Riders to the nonconference win.

Janiah Moore added two goals and a pair of assists for CR, which outshot the Cardinals, 23-4. Lynsy Gruwell (1 assist), Rebekah Bernat (1 assist) and Cowan Cummings also scored for the Riders.

Goalie Marianna Nuzzo made two saves.

Delmar 3, Newark Charter 1: The Wildcats scored two of the second half’s three goals in adding a nonconference victory.

Conrad 5, Delmarva Christian 2: Kirah Harmon scored a pair of second-half goals for the Royals.

Baseball

Polytech 12, Del. Academy of Public Safety/Security 7: Joseph Haas’ three-run double sparked a five-run seventh that capped off the Panthers’ victory.

Polytech finished with 10 hits and used four pitchers in the win.

Laurel 11, Delmarva Christian 7: The Bulldogs took a 7-0 lead after four innings before holding off the Royals.

Softball

Red Lion Christian 9, Milford 8: The Lions edged the Buccaneers in a nonconference game.

Delmarva Christian 21, Del. Academy of Public Safety/Security 6: The Royals scored six runs in the first and eight more in the fifth to finish off the victory.

Winning pitcher Kayla Thomas struck out seven while Rebecca Hastings scored four runs for Delmarva Christian.

College football

DSU’s Williams signed by Raiders: Delaware State’s Milton Williams III became the second Hornet to sign an NFL contract this weekend when he signed a free agent deal with the Oakland Raiders.

An All-MEAC third-team selection at receiver, Williams ranked third in the league in receptions at 4.2 per game, and was seventh in receiving yards at 48.8 per contest last season. His 2014 totals included 50 receptions for 586 yards (11.7 ypc) and five touchdowns.

Williams was an All-MEAC first-team and Heritage Sports Radio Network Black College All-America first-team selection after leading the MEAC in receptions per game (5.3) and receiving yards per contest (80.7) as a junior.

This past Saturday, former Hornet defensive lineman Rodney Gunter was selected in the fourth round (116th overall pick) by the Arizona Cardinals. Gunter was the Hornets’ first NFL draft pick since Darnerien McCants was taken in the fifth round by the Washington Redskins in 2000; and DSU’s highest NFL pick since John Taylor was tabbed by the 49ers in the third round of the 1986 draft.

College baseball

Hornets’ Zielecki honored: Delaware State first baseman/pitcher Jaylen Zielecki has been named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Week after batting .454 with three home runs, five RBI and four runs scored in four games.

He also had a career-high 12 strikeouts in a no-decision as the starting pitcher, and smacked a two-run homer in the Hornets’ 5-4 win over UMES on May 3.

For the season, Zielecki is tied for third on the Hornets with five home runs, is sixth on the club with 22 RBI and tied for the team lead with 13 steals.

On the mound, he has a 3-2 won-loss record and is second on the Hornets with 36 strikeouts.

Delaware State will return to action next week in the MEAC Tournament at Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, Md.

MEAC honors pair of Hornets: Capping off its regular season with a three-game of UMES, Delaware State saw sophomore Tara Tursellino garner MEAC Pitcher of the Week honors for the second time this year, while freshman Vanessa Washington was named MEAC Rookie of the Week for a third time.

Tursellino, who was last season’s MEAC Rookie of the Year, went 2-0 with a save and 12 strikeouts in 14 innings. For the season, Tursellino holds a team-best 4.42 ERA with a conference-high 126 strikeouts.

Washington batted a team-best .667 with four hits, three runs, two RBI and two doubles last week. On the year, she is batting .383, in addition to totaling 49 hits, 42 RBI, 30 runs, 14 doubles, nine walks and eight homers.

Coming up, the back-to-back MEAC North champions will head to Ormond Beach, Fla. later this week for the MEAC Tournament, which is set to begin on Thursday.
