School board filings spur elections in five districts

The filing deadline for the May 14 school board elections has passed, and contested races loom in five area districts.

In Sussex County, elections will be held in the Indian River, Woodbridge, and Delmar school districts.

Kent County will have one election, in the Lake Forest School District, while an election will be held in the Appoquinimink School District.

With the exception for the two Indian River District 1 terms, all board terms are four years, running through June of 2028.

The filing deadline was March 1.

Appoquinimink
Norman Abrams Jr., Timothy Johns and Britney Mumford are running for one seat.

Caesar Rodney
Jessica Marelli, the current board president, faces no opposition.

Cape Henlopen
Incumbent Alison J. Myers (At Large) is unopposed as isJanet E. Maull-Martin  (Area  C).

Capital
Incumbent John C. Martin is unopposed.

Delmar
Russell Smart and Dawn Turner are seeking the at-large seat.

Indian River
Contested races include District 3, with former Indian River superintendent Mark Steele and incumbent Dr. Heather Statler seeking the four-year term.

A District 4 seat is also up for grabs between Joshua W. Hudson and Anita West-Werner. That seat has been held by longtime board of education member Dr. Donald Hattier.

Four Indian River board seats are unopposed. Lisa Hudson Briggs and Kelly Kline filed for the two open District 1 seats, which will run through June 2025.

In District 5, current board members Derek Cathell and Kim Law Taylor are both unopposed.

Lake Forest
Current member Sarah R. Starkey and David Mazur are seeking the board term.

Laurel
Kim Ralph is running for the seat held by Brad Lee, who is not seeking re-election.

Milford
Current board member Jennifer Lynn Massotti is unchallenged.

Seaford
Dr. Dara Laws Savage is unopposed in her quest for another at-large term on the Seaford board.

Smyrna
Current board president Christopher T. Scuse is unopposed.

Woodbridge
Three candidates – John Campbell, Brian Swain and Kristie Thomas – are seeking a four-year term. That seat is presently held by Steve McCarron.
