Nolan Henderson threw for five touchdowns and the Smyrna High football team wrapped up its regular season with a 66-0 Henlopen Conference Northern Division victory against Polytech to finish 6-0 in the Henlopen North and 9-1 overall.

Charlie Taylor, Donte Ritchie, Brandon Bishop and Jared Gillis each caught a touchdown pass from Henderson. Ritchie scored twice while Will Knight and Stephen Whaley added rushing touchdowns in the first half as the Eagles lead 58-0 at halftime.

Moses Carter also scored for Smyrna on a 55-yard punt return in the first half.

Ryan McNatt connected with Marcus Vass on another passing touchdown in the second half.

Sussex Tech 38, Cape Henlopen 21: Patrick Griffin ran for four touchdowns, including three-straight to end the game as the Ravens out-scored the Vikings 23-3 in the second half.

Woodbridge 32, Delmar 6: Troy Haynes ran for a touchdown and threw another as the Blue Raiders likely clinched a spot in the Division II playoffs with a Henlopen South victory.

College soccer

Hens in CAA final: Third-seeded Delaware advanced past second-seeded Elon, 5-4 on penalty kicks, after the two teams battled to a 2-2 double overtime draw in the semifinals of the CAA Men’s Soccer Championship Friday at Hofstra Stadium.

The Blue Hens (10-6-4) will play in the CAA championship game for the second straight year at 2:30 p.m. Sunday against top-seeded Hofstra, who defeated James Madison, 2-0, in the nightcap.

With penalty kicks tied at 4-4, Delaware freshman Robert Gillin converted his shot into the left side of the net. Blue Hens’ freshman keeper Todd Morton then made a diving block of an attempt by the Phoenix’s Elijah Agu to send UD to the finals.

Elon (13-5-1) rallied from a 2-0 second-half deficit to force the extra session. The Phoenix, who are currently receiving votes in the NSCAA Coaches Poll, nearly completed the comeback in the second overtime. With just 2:20 remaining, Luis Argudo’s shot from the top of the box deflected off the left post.

Delaware struck quickly and took a 1-0 lead just 8:16 into the match. Senior midfielder Joe Dipre was able to dribble into the middle of the box and sent a left-footed shot off the right post for his fourth goal of the season. The Blue Hens nearly tacked on another score 90 seconds later, but a 12-yard chip from junior Guillermo Delgado flew just wide.

The Blue Hens extended their lead to 2-0 in the 54th minute. A Delaware corner kick led to a scramble in front of the Elon net. Senior midfielder Ben Sampson was able to corral a rebound and score his third goal of the year from five yards out.

Morton finished with six saves in goal for Delaware, while Matthew Jegier stopped five shots for Elon.

College basketball

WOMEN, Delaware 67, Lafayette 47: Three Blue Hens scored in double figures while a freshman notched a double double in her collegiate debut Friday evening as Delaware women’s basketball defeated Lafayette, 67-47, at the Bob Carpenter Center to kick off the 2015-16 campaign.

Senior Courtni Green led all scorers with 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field while junior Erika Brown posted 11 points with five rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Freshman Nicole Enabosi made a splash in her collegiate debut as she collected 11 points and 10 rebounds in addition to registering three steals and two assists in 28 minutes of play.

Senior Alecia Bell returned to the court for the first time in nearly a year to log four points, two rebounds, a steal, a blocked shot and an assist. Bell missed almost the entirety

of last season after breaking her left tibia and fibula in the home opener on Nov. 16, 2014.

Delaware (1-0) closed out the first half with an 8-0 run to lead, 29-23, at the break. The Hens put the pressure on in the third quarter and didn’t let the Leopards (0-1) come closer than within 11 points in the final period.  UD held LC scoreless in the final four-plus minutes.

Jamie O’Hare guided Lafayette with 14 points while Anna Ptaskinski posted 11 points and five rebounds. Harriet Ottewill-Soulsby notched 10 points and eight rebounds.

College volleyball

DSU 3, Hampton 2: A deciding fifth set was needed to determine a winner Friday night at Memorial Hall, as the Delaware State volleyball team (3-24, 1-11 MEAC) pulled out a thrilling 3-2 (25-21, 22-25, 25-21, 21-25, 19-17) victory at home over the Hampton Pirates (3-22, 3-9 MEAC) in its final Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) contest of the season.

“I feel like we played really hard and we played to the end,” said head coach Whitney Johnson.  “We were able to finish and capitalize on their mistakes.”

With this win, the Hornets not only picked up their first victory since a 3-1 win over Quinnipiac on Sept. 5, but DSU avenged a 3-1 road loss last Friday at Hampton.

Trading sets throughout the evening, the fifth frame featured the Hornets facing game-point with the Pirates up 14-10.  Unfazed, DSU battled back by ripping off five unanswered points to take the lead, led by senior Jasmine Jackson tallying two of her team-high 26 kills.  The nail-biting contest continued, until DSU’s Jae Jackson registered consecutive points by way of a kill and a service ace to give her squad the winning nod.

“I think they all started believing in the end,” added of Johnson of her team’s comeback victory in the final set.  “Believing that what’s in front of them is something they can accomplish.”

At match’s end, the Hornets finished with a .227 hitting percentage, whereas Jae Jackson (18) and junior Janessa Helu (11) tallied double figure kills.  Also, turning in a stellar performance was freshman Marisol Arredondo with a game-high 60 assists, while sophomore Alliyah McBean added a game-high 21 digs.

Coming up, the Columbia Blue & Red will look to close 2015 on a high note against Towson this Sunday at 1 p.m.  Earlier this season, Delaware State fell on the road to the Tigers on Aug. 30, 3-0.

Charleston 3, Delaware 2: Delaware jumped in front of the College of Charleston two sets to one but could not hold off the Cougars down the stretch as the Blue Hens dropped a five-set thriller at the Carpenter Sports Building.

The Cougars took the match by set scores of 25-27, 25-21, 16-25, 25-20, 15-11 as they won their fourth straight contest while improving to 18-12 overall and 10-6 in the CAA. Delaware, which dropped its fourth in a row, fell to 12-16 overall and 4-11 in league action.

The Blue Hens and William & Mary are each tied for sixth place and the final berth in next week’s conference tournament. However the Tribe holds the tiebreaker, so UD needs to defeat UNCW and have William & Mary lose to Hofstra on Sunday to qualify for postseason play.

Delaware was led by sophomore Daria Robinson, who doubled her previous career high by slamming 14 kills against the Cougars. Autumn Jenkins added 10 kills and 14 digs for the Blue Hens, while Julia Anderson handed out 42 assists on the evening. Chandler Bryant contributed nine kills and Katie Hillman chipped in eight, while fellow senior Ariel Shonk posted a team-leading 18 digs.

Melissa Morello recorded 25 kills and Krissy Mummey added 15 for Charleston, while Allison Beckman notched a double-double with 53 assists and 15 digs.

Delaware faced a set point in the opening frame at 25-24 but answered with kills from Bryant and Robinson, before Hillman and Alexa Swann teamed on a block to give the Blue Hens the early lead.
