Roundup: Lake Forest girls end regular season on four-game win streak

Lake Forest High used a big second quarter to pull away to a 61-41 victory over Laurel in Henlopen Conference Southern Division girls’ basketball on Wednesday night.

The Spartans finished the regular season with a four-game winning streak to post an overall record of 13-7.

The contest was tied 6-6 before Lake Forest outscored the Bulldogs, 23-7, in the second quarter.

Arika Burrell had 13 points while Daia Daniels had 12 as five Spartans netted nine points or more.

Logan Handy had a game-high 23 points for Laurel, which finishes with a record of 8-10.

Boys’ basketball

Laurel 65, Lake Forest 56: Derrell Holden tallied 18 points to pace the Bulldogs to the South victory.

Eric Pilot had 11 points with Jaquail Bland adding 10. Laurel finishes the regular season at 13-6.

Dominique Griffith and Cameron Lewis had 20 points each for the Spartans. At 10-10, Lake Forest won four more games than it did last season.

Sussex Central 62, Polytech 51: The Golden Knights built a 16-point lead after three quarters as they finished the season with a Henlopen North win.

Central closes the season with a record of 7-13 while the Panthers end up 4-16.

Swimming

Boys’ meet suspended: Wednesday night’s preliminary round of the DIAA boys’ swimming state championships was suspended after repeated lightning delays.

The meet will resume today at 4 p.m. at the University of Delaware’s Carpenter Sports Building. The girls’ preliminaries will then begin at 7 p.m.

College lacrosse

MEN, Arcadia 15, Wesley 5: Jack Redefer and Joe Fingles scored two goals apiece for the Wolverines in the loss.

The contest was stopped with five minutes remaining because of lightning.

Hunter Coho added the Wolverines’ other goal while John Chenault had two assists for the Wolverines (0-2). Goalie Cody Ireland made seven saves.

College baseball

George Washington 8, Wesley 0: The Hornets’ early-season offensive struggles continued on Tuesday in their nonconference loss.

The Hornets (0-5) were held to four singles in the contest.

George Washington (2-2) opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first inning off DSU starter Cole Davis. The Colonials added four runs in the sixth inning and two in the seventh to close out the scoring.

Bobby Campbell led George Washington’s 12-hit attack with two hits, both doubles, and three runs batted in. Campbell doubled in a run in the first and doubled in two more in the sixth.

Davis (0-1) allowed six hits and two runs, while striking out three and walking two, over 3.2 innings in his first collegiate start.

Darnell Maisonet, Jaylen Zielecki, Todd Henry and Adrian Hill each singled in the game for the Hornets. Zielecki has one hit in each of DelState’s five games this season.

Hornet reliever Terry Godfrey struck out two batters in 1.1 scoreless innings in the contest. Godfrey tossed a nine-inning shutout against George Washington as a freshman last season.
