The Kent County all-stars didn’t need a late-inning comeback this time,

District I jumped on Europe-Africa early with a six-run second inning and cruised to its second straight win to open the Big League Softball World Series, 12-4, on Tuesday afternoon at Lower Sussex Little League in Roxana.

This came a day after District I rallied from a 5-1 deficit in its first game of the tournament against Latin America. The Kent County team has a doubleheader today, facing Southwest at 3 p.m. and the host Delaware District III at 5:30 p.m.

District I belted three home runs in Tuesday’s victory courtesy of Whitney DeMora, Megan Fry and Harley Rickards. Darby Brennan scored four times while Shaina Reed struck out nine in six innings of work and Haylee Scruggs pitched the final inning to close out the victory.

District III 5, Latin America 2: Hailey Andrews hit a pair of homers as District III overcame an early 1-0 deficit on Tuesday morning.

Morgan Smith also added a home run for the hosts. Andrews and Smith each drove in two runs while Gabby Culver also had one RBI.

Andrews and Regan Green split the game in the pitcher’s circle and struck out seven batters apiece.

Senior League

District III 10, Latin America 0: The hosts needed just five innings for the victory against Latin American at the Senior League Softball World Series on Tuesday.

Rylee Shockley scattered four hits and struck out five for the shutout.

Taylor Evick knocked in three runs while Brooke Stoeckel went 2-for-2 with two RBI and three runs scored.

College football

Hornets open camp this week: The countdown to the 2015 Delaware State football season is officially underway. Hornet players return to campus today for the start of preseason camp. After two days of meetings, physicals and pictures, new head coach Kenny Carter will hold his first summer practice session on Friday at Alumni Stadium.

DSU will begin regular practice sessions on Aug. 24 in preparation for the season opener at Liberty University on Sep. 5. Game time is 7 p.m. in Lynchburg, Va.

After visiting Kent State the following week (Sep. 12 at 6 pm), the Hornets will play their home opener on Sep. 19 against Chowan. The Hall-of-Fame Day contest is scheduled for 2 pm at Alumni Stadium.

Delaware State will begin Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play at home against 2014 co-champ Morgan State on Oct. 3 at 2 p.m. The Bears were one of five teams to earn a share of the conference title last year.

The Hornets will also face MEAC opponents South Carolina State (Oct. 24; Homecoming), Bethune-Cookman (Oct. 31) and Howard (Nov. 21) at home this season.

DSU’s MEAC road slate features visits to Hampton (Oct. 10), Florida A&M (Oct. 17), North Carolina Central (Nov. 7) and North Carolina A&T (Nov. 14).

College baseball

Former DSU player turning heads in Texas: Former Delaware State standout Aaron Nardone is hoping his impressive season as an independent league professional baseball player will lead to bigger and better things.

Nardone, who played with the Hornets from 2011-to-2014, batted .329 (55-for-167), with 10 doubles, eight triples and five home runs as a rookie with the White Sands Pupfish of the independent Pecos Professional Baseball League in Texas this summer. He also stole seven bases in 10 attempts during the season.

A native of Chesapeake, Va., Nardone is Delaware State’s all-time leader with 17 triples. His career stats also include  a .328 batting average (216-for-659), 31 doubles, 19 home runs, 163 RBI and 62 stolen bases in four seasons with the Hornets.

Nardone was tops among all NCAA Division I players with a .521 on-base percentage as a senior in 2014. In addition, he led the nation in walks at 1.02 per game in his final season as a Hornet.

Former Delaware State catcher Eddie Sorondo (2011-14) has spent time this season with the Camden (N.J.) Riversharks of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball.
