Cape Henlopen High scored a pair of goals in the second half and defeated Mount Pleasant High 3-1 in the quarterfinals of the DIAA field hockey tournament on Saturday afternoon.

Lizzie Frederick and Tess Bernheimer each netted a goal for the top-seeded Vikings in the second half. Sydney Ostroski also scored for Cape Henlopen while Erin Coverdale recorded a pair of assists.

Cape out-shot the Green Knights 33-1 and held a 28-2 edge in penalty corners.

Delmar 1, Padua 0: Peyton Kemp’s second half goal with 12 minutes left helped lift the third-seeded Wildcats to the semifinals.

Delmar held Padua without a shot in the contest.

Boys’ soccer

Cape Henlopen 3, Sussex Tech 1: The Vikings avenged an earlier loss to Sussex Tech this season with a victory to advance to the DIAA semifinals.

Drew Mulcahy and Zach Gelof scored for Cape Henlopen who also netted on a Sussex Tech own goal.

Salesianum 6, Polytech 1: The defending champions eliminated the Panthers from the tournament and moved on to face Cape Henlopen on Wednesday at Smyrna High at a time to be determined.

College field hockey

Virginia 4, Delaware 3: For the second time in less than a month, No. 12 Delaware and No. 4 Virginia needed more than 70 minutes for a winner to emerge as the Cavaliers pulled out the 4-3 overtime victory Saturday at University Hall Field Turf in NCAA Tournament First Round action.

After an offensively charged first half produced six total goals, defense took over in a scoreless second half before Lucy Hyams connected with Riley Tata on a fast break for the game-winner in the 79th minute.

Junior Esmée Peet led Delaware (16-6) with a goal and assist while classmate Maura Zarkoskiand senior Michaela Patzner each collected goals in the loss. Sophomore goalie Emmeline Oltmans collected five saves for the Hens.

Tata finished the game with two goals for the Cavs (15-5), who will next face the winner between No. 6 Duke and No. 13 Stanford Sunday in the NCAA Tournament Second Round. Virginia logged 14 total saves in the game while Carrera Lucas notched eight in 55 minutes between the pipes.

College volleyball

Jackson named All-MEAC: Delaware State outside hitter Jasmine Jackson has been selected to the 2015 All-MEAC Volleyball Second Team, in voting by league head coaches and sports information representatives announced this weekend.

Jackson is second in the MEAC in kills per game (3.54) and fourth in total kills with 319. She also ranks second in the conference at 4.05 points per game (364.5 total points).

The Hornet standout is coming off one of the top performances in the MEAC this season, recording 26 kills, a career-high 13 aces and 13 digs in DSU’s 3-2 win over Hampton on Friday. The 13 aces are the most in the league this season, while her 39.5 points in the match also ranks as a conference high.

The 26 kills vs. Hampton raises Jackson’s career total to 980, third best in team history. Cassandra Joyner (2006-09) in the Hornets’ career leader with 1,268. Erica Tajchman (2007-10) is second with 1,069.
