Freshman wing Evan Anderson had only scored in double-digits on four occasions entering Wednesday night’s game against Penn State-Harrisburg, but the freshman scored a career-high 21 points to lead the Wesley College men’s basketball team to a 65-43 win.

Anderson shot 6-for-12, including 5-for-10 from behind the arc, as the Wolverines earned their third conference win. Wayne Lennon added 19 points and seven rebounds as he and Anderson combined for 61.5% of the Wesley scoring. JW Lawson added 11 points off the bench and snagged a team-high four steals.

The Wolverines committed just seven turnovers while forcing PSU-Harrisburg into 18.

The Wolverines improved to 5-11 with a 3-6 mark in Capital Athletic Conference play. The team is scheduled to play Southern Virginia on Saturday, but will likely reschedule due to the incoming weather system.

College lacrosse

WOMEN, Hens picked third in CAA: The University of Delaware women’s lacrosse team had five players honored while the Blue Hens were selected to finish third in the Colonial Athletic Association in the league’s preseason voting, as decided upon by the conference’s head coaches.

Seniors Casey Lyons and Erin Wein plus junior Jamie Schwartz were All-CAA picks while seniors Shannon Hawley and Kara Dattellas received Honorable Mention accolades.

The defending CAA champion James Madison Dukes was picked to finish atop the standings in 2016 by earning five first place votes and a total of 35 points.  Last season’s championship runner-up, Towson, collected a first place vote with 28 points to finish in second.

The Blue Hens also earned a first place vote and are slated third for the upcoming year with 26 points.

Hofstra (25) was fourth while Elon (13) was picked fifth.  William & Mary (11) and Drexel (9) rounded out the standings in sixth and seventh places.

High school wrestling

Caesar Rodney 42, Sussex Tech 28: The Riders defeated Sussex Tech in a Henlopen Conference Northern Division match behind five pins.

Benedict Anderson (113 pounds), Bobby Stevenson (126), Cody Stevenson (132), Chase Mounts (138) and Mike Clavier (195) each recorded a pin. Clavier’s pin was the fastest in 40 seconds for the Riders who also won two matches via forfeit.

Jacob Hamer (160) and Robert Van Pelt (220) had pins for Sussex Tech.

Smyrna 31, Polytech 24: Chase Archangelo earned a tech-fall at 132 pounds as the Eagles won seven matches by decisions and one via forfeit.

Polytech was led by a pinfall by Matt Land (145) and a tech-fall by Justin Land (220).

Cape Henlopen 57, Dover 12: Anthony Caruso (113), Maxwell Norquest (126), Justin Wright (132), Vincent Diego (138), Cory Lawson (160), Christopher Handlin (182) and William Ott (220) all won with a pin as the Vikings picked up a Henlopen North victory.

Tyler Rosello recorded the lone pin for Dover at 285 pounds.

Milford 51, Indian River 25: The Buccaneers got pins by Robbie Rosser (106), Gavin Garcia (132), Chase Taylor (152) and Bevensky Agustin (182) in the Henlopen South win.

Smyrna to hold alumni event Friday: Smyrna High will be celebrating the 20th year reunion of its 1996 dual meet state championship team with wrestlers, coaches, cheerleaders and managers. Also, as a result of the Eagles registering the program’s 600th victory last week, all past head coaches, individual state champions and wrestlers will be recognized at Smyrna’s 7 p.m. match.

There will be record books available, old scrapbooks and pictures along with t-shirts commemorating the 600th victory for sale.

Boys’ basketball

Smyrna 56, Sussex Central 41: In a Henlopen North game played Tuesday night, the Eagles built a 21-point lead after three quarters before posting the win.

Caleb Matthews (16 points) and Ja’Vier Worthy (15) both scored in double figures for Smyrna.

Tai’Ron Abbott had 14 points for the Golden Knights.

Indian River 75, Salisbury School, Md. 41: DeAndre Cooper paced the Indians with 13 points in the nonconference win. Jamier Felton and Demetrius Jenkins each chipped in 11 points.

Delmarva Christian 54, Holly Grove Christian, Md. 47: Micah Magee and Austin Giltner netted 16 points apiece to pace the Royals to the victory.

Giltner hit four of Delmarva Christian’s nine three-pointers in the contest.

Girls’ basketball

Delmarva Christian 42, Holly Grove 24: Camryn Breasure scored 14 points with Ashlee McCoy adding 11 for the Royals.

Indian River 48, Salisbury School, Md: 29: Three players scored in double figures as the Indians picked up a nonconference victory.

Kealey Allison led all scorers with a season-high 12 points and six steals. Fabrea McCray and Madison McGee netted 11 points apiece.

Football

Smyrna puts four on Gold roster: Division I state champion Smyrna High had four players selected as the rosters for this year’s Blue-Gold All-Star Football Game were announced on Wednesday.

This 61st edition of the contest will be played on June 18 at Delaware Stadium. Middletown’s Mark DelPercio is the Gold head coach with William Penn’s Marvin Dooley coaching the Blue.

Twenty-three Henlopen Conference players were named to the Gold squad, which includes players north to Newark. Middletown also has four players on the Gold team.
