Police: Delmar man arrested after shooting towards trooper

Posted

DELMAR - Roger Little, 64, of Delmar, was arrested for reckless endangering and other charges following an incident Tuesday night when he shot towards a trooper, Delaware State Police said.

At approximately 8:11 p.m., spokesman Senior Cpl. Leonard DeMalto said, troopers responded to a residence on Blue Bird Lane after 911 dispatchers received a call of a shooting.

The caller, identified as Mr. Little, told dispatchers that he had shot a man armed with a knife who had broken into his home. Mr. Little said that there were also other people who were in his house, but he failed to answer follow-up questions asked by dispatchers.

A trooper arrived at the scene and exited his patrol vehicle. Once he did so, police said, Mr. Little fired rounds in his direction from his house. The trooper returned gunfire, and the other responding officers established a perimeter around the property.

Troopers heard additional gunshots while Mr. Little was still in the residence. A member of the State Police Conflict Management Team called Mr. Little on the phone and have him exit the house.

Mr. Little walked outside and got into an unoccupied State Police vehicle, and he was subsequently taken into custody by troopers without further incident.

A shotgun and several spent shotgun rounds were found inside the home, police said.

No injuries were reported in the incident. There were no injured people in Mr. Little’s home, and police said his claim that there had been intruders was not substantiated.

Mr. Little was admitted to an area hospital to address preexisting medical concerns. He will be arraigned on the following charges when he is released from the hospital:

Possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, first-degree reckless endangering, and third-degree criminal trespass. Mr. Little remains in the custody of Department of Corrections personnel while he receives medical care.
