MILTON - A 30-year-old Clayton woman died from injuries suffered in a three-vehicle accident early Thursday, Delaware State Police said.

Spokesman Senior Cpl. Leonard DeMalto said the woman was driving a Ford Fiesta on Del. 1 southbound at approximately 6:47 a.m. A Ford Escort vehicle failed to remain stopped at a stop sign on Del. 5 and attempted to cross Del. 1, police said. The Fiesta driven by the Clayton woman then struck the rear of the Escort, police said.

The Fiesta rotated in the road, which led a Honda Accord to strike it, police said. The Escort spun and struck a fence, police said.

The driver of the Fiesta was critically injured, police said. She was taken to an area hospital but later died from her injuries, authorities said. Identification of the victim is pending notification to her family.

The driver of the Escort, an 81-year-old Millsboro man, was taken by ambulance to an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The passenger in the Escort, a 75-year-old woman from Millsboro, was also taken by ambulance to an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Accord, a 32-year-old man from Hartly, was not injured.

Both the northbound and southbound lanes of Del. 1 were closed for approximately 3.5 hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.

The Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate this incident. Troopers are asking anyone who witnessed this collision to please contact Senior Corporal R. Albert by calling 302-703-3266. Information may also be provided by sending a private Facebook message to the Delaware State Police or contacting Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-847-3333.
