Local roundup: Delaware State snaps 40-game Division I losing streak

Delaware State had to go to overtime to get it.

But finally the Hornets own a win over an NCAA Division I opponent again.

Delaware State snapped a 40-game losing streak against Division I opponents by pulling out an 88-85 victory at South Carolina State in MEAC men’s basketball on Monday night.

The Hornets (1-4 MEAC, 2-16 overall) overcame a 39-26 halftime deficit to post their first win over a Division I opponent since beating Morgan State on March 6, 2021.

Delaware State out-scored the Bulldogs, 17-14, in the five-minute OT period.

The Hornets never trailed in overtime, leading by as many as eight points.
DSU tied the game at 71-71 when Brandon Stone sank a pair of free throws with 21 seconds left in regulation.

Khyrie Staten (19 points), Stone (18), Martaz Robinson (17) and Jevin Muniz (16) all finished in double figures for the Hornets. Corey Perkins added seven assists and six points.

South Carolina State (0-5 MEAC, 3-18) led for over 36 minutes of the contest.

WOMEN, Delaware State 58, South Carolina State 49: The Hornets out-scored South Carolina State by 12 points in the fourth quarter to rally for the MEAC win.

Freshman guard Savannah Brooks netted a season-high 18 points for the Hornets (2-3 MEAC, 4-12 overall).

Trailing 39-36 after three quarters, Delaware State took the lead at 47-46 on a pair of free throws by Tyshonne Tollie (11 points) with 5:36 remaining. Tollie then followed with a jumper to stretch the Hornets’ lead to 49-46.

Delaware State finished the game on a 22-10 run against the Bulldogs (0-3 MEAC, 1-17 overall). The Hornets shot 9-of-11 from the floor and 4-of-6 from the foul line in the fourth quarter.

Deyonce Thompson added 10 points.

College track & field

DSU posts three wins in meet: The Delaware State men’s indoor track and field team posted three individual wins at the Gotham Cup Hosted at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.

Dover High grad Tayshaun Chisholm won the 60-meter hurdles (8.04 seconds), Andre Carr, Jr. won the 60 meters (6.89 seconds) and Morey Campbell won the high jump (1.99 meters).

In the women’s meet, the Hornets won the 4 x 400-meter relay (3:56.34).

College bowling

DSU finishes 22nd in event: Delaware State placed 22nd out of a 33-team field at the Northeast Classic hosted by Sacred Heart University.

The Hornets posted wins over Wisconsin Whitewater, Wilmington University and Youngstown State. Delaware State was led by Emily Breidegam, Emily Garl and Skylar Tenan who all finished in the top-half of the individual field.
