Letter to the Editor: What really happened at the Capitol Jan. 6, 2021?

Posted

What really happened on Jan. 6, 2021, at the Capitol building? Did former President Donald Trump cause the insurrection on the United States Capitol building while Congress met to certify the votes of the 2020 presidential election?

Congress convened on Jan. 6 in the Capitol and had to flee for their lives, as protesters fought their way through the prized halls of our nation’s home.

President Trump had spoken to protesters earlier in front of the White House. He said, “I know that everyone here will soon be marching over to the Capitol building to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard.” He also said, “And if you don’t fight like hell, you’re not going to have a country anymore.”

For those words by the former president, he was impeached in the House of Representatives one week later.

Did former President Donald Trump have any involvement in the Capitol insurrection? Let’s look at some of the facts.

Trump did not let protesters storm or break into the Capitol; he was not even there. How about protesters being let through police perimeters? Was the former president on guard at one of those police perimeters?

And who then caused so much damage to the Capitol building? Who were these unruly mobs of Americans? Could it have been the Proud Boys, the Three Percenters, the Oath Keepers or the “boogaloo” movements?

Did former President Donald Trump conspire with these groups to storm the Capitol? I do not believe there was Trump collusion — only a party that was trying to destroy him. There is much speculation, from the intriguing to the absurd, about what is going on in this country. The truth lies somewhere in between.

For the sake of all those bitterly disappointed Americans and for some semblance of normalcy inside national government here in the United States, let the truth be found and found quickly.
