DAGSBORO — Nine-year Indian River School District board of education member Dr. Heather Statler has withdrawn as a District 3 candidate in this year’s election, leaving former superintendent Mark Steele unopposed.

Dr. Statler, who championed several initiatives linked to special education during her tenure, officially withdrew Thursday.

The vote will take place May 14 and includes races in four out of five districts. Only one is contested.

In District 4, Anita West-Werner faces Joshua Hudson for the seat now held by 22-year member Dr. Donald Hattier, who is not seeking another term.

Candidates in districts 1, 3 and 5 are unchallenged.

In District 1, Lisa Hudson Briggs and Kelly Kline are unopposed for those two seats, which expire June 30, 2025. They were appointed in late February, filling vacancies created when Madeline Moses and Jim Fritz moved out of their area and had to step down.

Mr. Steele is the one candidate in the one open seat in the 3rd District, and current board members Derek Cathell and Kim Law Taylor are unopposed for the two District 5 seats.

Those terms, along with District 3’s, are for four years, running through June 30, 2028.
