GEORGETOWN — The Delaware State Police are investigating a homicide that occurred Monday at Dunbarton Oaks Apartments, Sgt. India Sturgis said.

Authorities said that, at approximately 8:28 p.m., the Georgetown Police Department responded to the complex for a reported shooting. When officers arrived, they located a male victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds inside an apartment.

An investigation revealed that the victim was a visitor at the residence. While inside the home, he had responded to the door upon hearing a knock, letting a female guest inside.
Once the woman was in the apartment, an unknown male suspect forced the front door open and shot the victim several times, Sgt. Sturgis said.

The suspect then fled on foot, she added. Emergency medical services arrived and transported the victim to an area hospital, where he died from his injuries.

The victim’s identification is being withheld pending notification of kin.

The state police Homicide Unit assumed the case at the request of Georgetown police. No suspect information was available Tuesday.

The investigation continues, and troopers asked anyone with information to contact Detective B. McDerby at 302-741-2821, to send a message via the state police Facebook page or to contact Delaware Crime Stoppers at 800-847-3333.
