DOVER — The Capital School Board has approved Dover High’s new football coach.

But the district is still waiting to hear whether the candidate has accepted the job before announcing his name.

School board member Sean Christiansen said the board approved the search committee’s recommendation for the coaching position when it met in executive session during its February meeting on Wednesday night.

Christansen said he spoke to Capital superintendent Daniel Shelton on Thursday afternoon.

“According to him, the offer is extended to the person that was approved,” said Christiansen. “Once they accept it, it will be made public.”

Dover is hiring a replacement for Dante Jones, who is not being brought back after three seasons as the Senators’ head coach.

The two leading candidates were believed to be Lake Forest coach Freddie Johnson and former NFL player and Christiana High grad Jamie Duncan.

Johnson, though, said on Thursday that he is not a candidate for the Dover job.

Duncan, who has connections to both Delaware and Florida, was not available for comment.

The 30-year-old Duncan was a third-round draft pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1998. A linebacker, he spent seven seasons in the NFL, also playing for the Rams and the Falcons.

Duncan was also a star at Vanderbilt in college, earning SEC Legends of the Game recognition.

In his three seasons, Jones led Dover to an overall record of 16-16 with a 9-9 mark in the Henlopen Conference Northern Division.

The Senators, though, have gone through back-to-back losing seasons. They were 2-4 in the North, 4-6 this past season.
