Local roundup: Cape Henlopen wins at Caesar Rodney

Cape Henlopen High spoiled Caesar Rodney High’s homecoming with a 41-13 victory on Friday night in a Class 3A, District II contest.

The Vikings improved to 1-1 in district play and 4-2 overall. Caesar Rodney dropped to 0-7 (0-3 district).

Smyrna 42, Mergenthaler Tech, Md. 20: Yamir Knight and Markell Holman each recorded a pair of touchdowns in the Eagle victory.

The Eagles (5-1) led by as much as 42-6 in the third quarter.

Holman caught a 20-yard touchdown from quarterback Brian Wright and contributed a nine-yard rush for a score. Knight had two rushing touchdowns, one from three yards out and another from seven.

Wright also threw a 48-yard touchdown to Joshua Gueh. Christian Galban added a 96-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Caravel 28, Woodbridge 16: The Blue Raiders fell in Class 2A, District 3A action on Friday.

Ci-Atrick Stones caught two touchdowns, one from Traci Johnson and one from Zach Plummer, to lead Woodbridge (1-4).

Seaford 41, First State Military 14: The Blue Jays bounced back after their first loss of the year to move to 5-1 on the season.

Field hockey

Polytech 2, Caravel 1: Rachel Carey scored twice as the Panthers won a nonconference matchup Friday night to improve to 4-6 overall.

Women’s field hockey

Delaware 2, Towson 1: Sian Emslie scored the game-winning goal in overtime in the 65th minute.

Emslie took the ball away from a Towson defender, sprinted toward the goal, and found the back of the net past the sliding Towson goalkeeper. It was Emslie’s second goal of the season.

It was the third straight Colonial Athletic Association win for Delaware (5-9, 3-1 CAA).

The Blue Hens outshot the Tigers 31-10 and had a 17-6 shots-on-goal advantage. It was the most shots in a game for the Blue Hens since Oct. 15, 2017, against Columbia. The Blue Hens had a season-high 12 penalty corners to the Tigers one.

Julia Duffhuis had a season-high eight shots while Lia Becker scored her second goal of the season. Lizzie Gaebel was credited with the decision. She had five saves and allowed one goal.

College volleyball

Delaware State 3, Morgan State 0: Karen Cordero recorded a game-high 13 points behind a career-high six service aces and seven kills to lead the Hornets to the victory in straight sets.

Alondra Maldonado and Valeria Otero each tallied a match-best nine kills with Maldonado notching a double-digit point night (10) by way of two assisted blocks.

Setters Malgorzata Andersohn (21) and Alayna Lacy (13) combined for 34 of the team’s 39 total assists. Lacy tied her season-best in service aces with three in the win.

With the win, the Hornets pick up their fourth straight shutout win to improve to 15-5 overall with a 5-1 mark in MEAC action. As for the series matchup between Delaware State and Morgan State, the Hornets notched their seventh-straight win over the Bears with six coming by 3-0 wins. Delaware State have now claimed 18 consecutive sets over Morgan State.
