We asked candidates in this year’s Delaware election, “How do you perceive the ‘Delaware Way’ today?” We’d also like our readers to share what the phrase means to them. And how has it changed?
- It appears to me that the “Delaware Way” has mutated into the “Wilmington Way,” with little regard to the beliefs and convictions of the two southern counties. It seems rare that anyone outside of New Castle residents are elected to statewide or national offices. — Ellen Hart Richardson
- The “Delaware Way” refers to the current state of single-party rule and corruption, with lack of transparency or care for the citizens. That is alive and well. — Jonathan Contant
- Well, I perceive it as I always have, after moving here 25 years ago — it’s truly the “old boy network.” I have noticed that it isn’t what you know, what your experience is or what your demonstrated capabilities are. It is who you know. I understand that it is a small state, and “everyone” knows “somebody,” but it is really mind-boggling to witness firsthand. — Name withheld
