Weeks: Medical school news is encouraging for Delaware

Posted

Congratulations, Gov. Matt Meyer, on taking the recommendation published in the March 2024 medical school feasibility study, commissioned by the Sussex Economic Development Action Committee, to establish a medical school by partnering with an existing one and creating a branch campus in Delaware. Well done! I was fortunate to attend the press conference at Beebe Healthcare on Nov. 12, and my sense of the collaboration and energy around this initiative is exciting. This is great news for our state.

I encourage the administration to consider additional recommendations from the SEDAC study and to engage with the existing health care systems in Sussex County — namely, Bayhealth, Beebe and TidalHealth Nanticoke — to serve as clinical campuses and to locate the medical school in rural Sussex County. This would be the most effective way to meet the needs of underserved populations and leverage Rural Health Transformation Program funding.

I also want to thank my fellow committee members, who supported this initiative back in 2022 and ultimately agreed to commission the study.

And, to my fellow Beebe board members and colleagues, help is on the way!
