The Hive on Loockerman cuts ribbon

DOVER — Business and event center The Hive on Loockerman is ready for clients after a Central Delaware Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting Friday.

“We live in central Delaware, in a place where there’s so much potential,” owner Chevonne Boyd said. “(The Hive on Loockerman) is going to be a place where entrepreneurs can come and create and make magic happen, make their dreams happen.”

She added that the idea for the 28 W. Loockerman St. enterprise originated from a love for corporate event planning.

“In 2018, I started a nonprofit called All Things :13, and we would host events to raise money for local charities,” Ms. Boyd said. “One of the biggest issues we found was finding a space that was affordable and accessible to us as a new nonprofit.

“And I found that, by the time we finished raising all the money, a good portion of it went to paying for the venue.”

This problem is one The Hive aims to solve.

“I really wanted to make sure that it was affordable so that new business owners could have a place that was beautiful, that was accessible, and something that would not kill their profit margins,” she continued.

Though The Hive is member-based, Ms. Boyd said membership is not required to host an event or book a space. Anyone interested in doing so can submit an inquiry via the venue’s website.

Becoming a member does have its perks, however, like access to keynote speeches, workshops and networking opportunities.

Rentals run on an hourly basis, depending on the customer’s needs, but various packages are also offered for nonprofits, corporations or smaller businesses.

She said she can rent out space as little as 72 hours in advance, provided there is availability.

The Hive offers more than just workspace, too, with two recording booths. Ms. Boyd hopes to begin a podcast in the next year, through which entrepreneurs can promote their initiatives.

Customers can also work with The Hive for event planning, even if it’s not held on-site.
