Swiatek surges past 18-year-old Iva Jovic to reach China Open quarterfinals

Posted

BEIJING (AP) — Iga Swiatek broke Iva Jovic's serve twice in the last four games to beat the 18-year-old American 6-1, 6-3 on Wednesday and advance to the quarterfinals of the China Open.

No. 8-seeded Swiatek will next play either third-seeded Coco Gauff or Elise Mertens in the WTA 1000 tennis tournament in Beijing.

Gauff, who said she received an “insane” amount of racist comments on social media following a controversial point in her Monday match against Chinese player Sun Xinran, was scheduled to take on Mertens later Wednesday in another fourth-round match.

Swiatek beat Gauff in the 2022 French Open final, one of her four Roland Garros titles among six Grand Slam singles championships.

Swiatek has a 11-5 head-to-head record against Gauff, although Gauff has won their last four matches.
