Sussex Master Gardeners to host 2024 A Day in the Garden

GEORGETOWN — Sussex County Master Gardeners will host A Day in the Garden from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. June 22 at the University of Delaware’s Elbert N. And Ann V. Carvel Research and Education Center.

Tour 32 specialty gardens in the one-acre Demonstration Garden behind the center. The free event is rain or shine.

Master Gardeners will be on hand to provide information in workshops, demonstrations and one-on-one conversations.

Information booths feature expertise from the Beekepers’ Association and The Center for Inland Bays on Invasive Species.

Mini workshops offered are:

  • 10:30 a.m. Are You Still Gardening? Tips for Accessible Gardening
  • 11 a.m. Cut Flower Arranging
  • 11:30 a.m. Native Container Gardening
  • Noon Herbal Infusions
  • 12:30 p.m. Herbal Vinegars
  • 1 p.m. Basic Composting

Also, at 12:30 p.m. is a guided insect walk with UD Entomologist Brian Kunkel.

Master Gardener puppeteers will present “The Misadventures of Peter Rabbit in Farmer McGregor’s Garden” at 11:15 a.m. All children will receive a free ice cream cone from UDairy Creamery Moo Mobile. Other children’s activities include a scavenger hunt and a garden buddy's craft.

The plant sale in the grove near the entrance will offer native plants and other annuals, perennials, ferns, shrubs and trees. Profits from the sale help support Master Gardener programs and the Demonstration Garden.
