State track first day complete, resumes Monday
DOVER — The first day of the DIAA track and field championships went off without a hitch at a sun-drenched Dover High on Friday afternoon.
The second day will take a lot longer to complete due to wet weather.
DIAA officials elected to move the final day of the track meet to Monday afternoon citing today’s forecast which called for a 100 percent chance of rain in Dover with predicted totals of up to 1.5-inches and winds of up to 25 miles per hour.
Competition will begin at 3 p.m. on Monday for field events and 3:30 p.m. for track events.
The meet is scheduled to end by 8:45 p.m. It will still be hosted at Dover.
If Monday’s events are also rained out, the make-up date will be Wednesday on the same event schedule.
Wednesday’s Meet of Champions would then be moved to a different date to be determined.
Lake Forest’s Isaiah Morris highlighted the downstaters’ efforts on Friday, capturing a pair of Division II state titles in field events.
Morris won the high jump with a leap of 6-foot-6. He followed that up by taking first in the long jump with a mark of 21-feet-8¼-inches.
Tatnall raced out to the early lead in both Division II boys and girls competitions. The Hornets swept the 3,200 meter run and the 4x800 on Friday.
Lake Forest, the defending champions for the boys, could challenge Tatnall’s distance runners by making up points in the field events and sprints, like they did on Friday behind Morris’ performance.
On the Division I side for girls’, Padua is eying third-straight championship. The Pandas had three gold medals on Friday to once again take a big lead over competitors Smyrna and Wilmington Charter.
The boys’ Division I race is shaping to be a competitive one with Salesianum, Dover, Wilmington Charter, Mount Pleasant, Caesar Rodney and Henlopen Conference champion Smyrna all in the mix.
Several records did fall on Friday.
Padua’s Lydia Olivere broke the meet record in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10:34.86. Meanwhile Micaiah Dendy had a jump of 18-feet-5½ in the long jump for a Division II girls’ meet record.
