The efforts of Congress to curb the influence of figures like Donald Trump and Elon Musk are shockingly insufficient. As Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., warns, the stakes have never been higher for our republic. Our democracy is precariously balanced, and decisive action is crucial. This is not the time for compromises or half-measures. Congress must act with urgency and creativity to protect our democratic institutions.
Why are Democrats still trying to negotiate with Republicans on doomed legislation? The current focus should not be on crafting bills that will inevitably fail but rather on spearheading a new movement. Collaboration at this juncture is a distraction; what is needed is bold, unilateral action.
Instead of short-lived victories like brief filibusters, Democrats should consider prolonged, coordinated efforts to halt Republican agendas. With 46 Democratic senators, a rotating schedule could sustain a monthlong filibuster, making a powerful statement and demonstrating unwavering resolve.
As Sen. Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich., asserts, Democrats must adopt a ruthless approach. It is time to create a protective “firewall” for the nation. This means exploring every possible method to obstruct actions that threaten democracy. Drastic times call for drastic measures, reminiscent of the civil rights movements led by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.
Congress controls governmental funding and should leverage that power to gain access to all federal buildings. If access is denied, Democrats could stage sit-ins, invoke injunctions or even risk arrests to draw attention to their cause. Such acts would signify to constituents that their leaders are willing to take significant risks — just as great leaders have in the past — to defend democracy.
Let’s face it — no one is happy. Maybe just the American billionaires? And Russians? The nation is witnessing a surge in protest rallies, reflecting widespread public dissatisfaction and a desire for change. By taking bold action, Democrats can redirect the spotlight from Trump to their proactive leadership. This is a pivotal moment in history, and the opportunity for decisive action is now.
Let us not squander it. Congress must lead, inspire and energize the populace into action.
Our republic depends on it.
