Sperry: King of bling is ignoring America’s needy

Posted

The “renter” in the White House is trying to make “The People’s House” into the Imperial Palace, without permission of the landlord(s). The Rose Garden has become a paved patio, the East Wing has been bulldozed to make room for a 90,000-square-foot ballroom, the Lincoln Bedroom’s bathroom has been marbleized, and on Oct. 31, we bore witness to a “Great Gatsby”-inspired party at Mar-a-Lago, filled with the rich and famous, who couldn’t care less that the government was cutting off Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program payments.

Over 42 million people rely on SNAP to feed their families, and this includes 1 out of 4 military families who do not make enough to subsist. Many federal employees, furloughed or fired, have to resort to food banks during this government shutdown.

So, now, Donald Trump is saying he is willing to give them half of their benefits for the month of November. What he does not say is that this will take some time to set up.

This is not who we are as a nation. If you are a true Christian, you are admonished to feed the poor, clothe the needy and love your neighbor. What we have now is an administration that says, in effect, “If they have no bread, let them eat cake.”
