Speak Up: Where are all the substitute teachers?

Posted

As a result of the omicron variant of the coronavirus, many school districts across the country are finding themselves short of teachers, who are quitting, getting sick or even dying. Some schools have even called on parents to step in to provide adult supervision in classrooms. Normally, schools hire substitutes to cover teacher absences. But there are so many teachers out with COVID-19 that the demand is much higher than usual.

  • Subs don’t get paid the same amount as teachers who refuse to go to work, so maybe that should change. Treat subs better, and there will be no shortage. — Alex Fowler

State economy fleeced by landlords’ high rents, yet is permitted

The shortage of affordable housing has made each of us who rent our living quarters a target for a mugging by corporations and their investors, who simply want as much of our money as they can squeeze out of us. Draining excessive rent money from our economy and the fact that many of the corporations and investors don’t pay Delaware taxes, and may not pay U.S. taxes, doesn’t seem to bother many of our state legislators.

  • You forget to mention the difference between a person who rents a house or an apartment and someone who bought a house on rented ground and has a large investment in the house. Now that the land rent has gone up, it is the fault of the landowner, not the land renter who signed the deal and agreed to it? You want the landowners to NOT capitalize on their investment so much, saying don’t be so greedy. Sorry, that’s what people do who invest their money. They try and make as much as they can. The American way. The premise that all the money is going out of state doesn’t hold any water if you shop at Walmart because the money you spend there goes out of state, to Bentonville, Arkansas, to be exact. But that doesn’t stop anyone from shopping there. Why should land rental to an out-of-state owner be any different than buying on Amazon? Lesson to be learned here, folks: Don’t buy a dwelling on rented ground or the landowner might have you over a barrel. — Jay Pratt
