Speak Up: When is it allowable for government to use eminent domain to claim private property?

Posted

Milford City Council recently voted to suspend its campaign to condemn an 8-acre parcel of land via eminent domain, allowing resident Annette Billings to maintain ownership of the property. The move came after many in the city spoke out in support of Ms. Billings over the previous month, via social media, signage and meeting comments. What do you think about the eminent domain process? What are the alternatives?

  • Eminent domain is intended for public works. Not for parks. Not for economic development. And the price paid should be the value assessed for taxes. — Charles Miller
  • If it’s road construction, it’s never an issue. They just take the land. The bike path and recreation area are good ideas, but they need to be negotiated with the owner, not just taken. Plenty of other places to put in paths and recreation areas. — Vincent Deskiewicz
  • Truly don’t think there ever should be. But governments like to think everything is theirs. As they forget, the politicians/government work for the people. The people do not work for politicians/government. — Jeff Grzeszczak
  • No one should be allowed to legally steal your property. — Bobbi Smithy
