Speak Up: Transportation Department details Del. 1 median barrier installation

Posted

Del. 1 commuters may have noticed the installation of median barriers up and down the highway over the past several weeks. According to C.R. McLeod, the Delaware Department of Transportation’s director of community relations, the project currently covers the stretch from Trap Shooters Road in Magnolia to Del. 30 in Milford. He said the construction began in spring 2024 and is scheduled to end in the spring of next year. The goal, he added, is to help prevent crossover crashes.

  • Ever see a car split in half by these? I have, with a person inside. — Eric Vance
  • Would not want to hit that on a motorcycle. Would have a better chance with a jersey barrier. — Mike Hamlin
  • Wondered what that was. Great idea. — Marie Guaragna
  • Only 20 years too late. — Ronald Gaddafi
  • We still have a narrow strip of grass on U.S, 13, south of Odessa until about Fieldsboro. It is a fraction of the space between the lanes on Del. 1. The Department of Transportation really needs to install this barrier system there. — Davis H. Jefferson
  • This has been one of the Department of Transportation’s best projects in a while. When it was discussed in 2008 or earlier, I thought it would never come to fruition in my lifetime, but it has. Great work, DelDOT. — Matthew Powell
  • When I moved here from the West Coast, I always felt this crossover traffic was just an accident waiting to happen. Glad they are doing something to ensure safety. — Michaela Evelyne Bell
  • Needs to be done all the way to the Nassau Bridge. — Patrick Dembkowski
  • We have those on Interstate 70, east of Indianapolis, and they work well! Driving to work one morning in a snowstorm, a car coming toward me spun out and hit that wire guardrail, and it stopped it from coming into our lanes of traffic! — Rebecca Rogers
  • I’ve always wanted to know the cost to repair the sections that are damaged. — Timmothy Drummond
  • Just think of those median barriers as the highway’s way of giving you a safe, smooth ride ahead! — Samantha Abraham
  • What about a motorcyclist? That would hurt. — John Pittman
  • Yes! That is a good observation, but what would hurt less? The encounter with traffic going the other direction at an equivalent speed of 120 mph, a solid concrete wall or perhaps the Department of Transportation should distribute nice, fluffy pillows all along the medians? — Richard Wells
