Betty Ford reportedly said that, if the White House’s West Wing is the “mind” of the nation, then the East Wing — the traditional power center for first ladies — is the “heart.” That history came to an end after wrecking crews tore down the wing’s two stories of offices and reception rooms recently.
- I am baffled by the lack of commentary about the blatant desecration of the White House, the most iconic monument in these United States. Not long ago, there were rallies and protests over the moving of various monuments. They were not even destroyed — just moved. Fast-forward to now: This is beyond one’s comprehension that “The People’s House,” the White House, is being destroyed bit by bit and with no oversight, by the whim of one single person waving a wand. Everyone in this country, regardless of what side of the aisle they are on, should also view this with horror and as a sign of disrespect to everyone in this great nation. I am glad that my parents and grandparents are not here to witness this travesty. — Bev Plachta
