Speak Up: Smyrna’s Korean War Memorial moved to more prominent spot

U.S. Army Pfc. Richard D. Hutchinson, a Smyrna native, was killed during the Battle of the Ch’ongch’on River on Nov. 28, 1950, during the outset of the Korean War. A conflict sandwiched between World War II and the Vietnam War, the Korean War is often described as “forgotten.” But Pfc. Hutchinson’s niece, Beth Lightcap, along with her family and several others in Smyrna, haven’t forgotten, as witnessed by their recent hosting of a rededication ceremony for the town’s Korean War Memorial at George C. Wright Jr. Municipal Park. The monument was moved from its longtime location adjacent to the gazebo in the back of the park to a more visible spot, just off North Main Street.
