The Smyrna School District announced that the controversial painting of political activist Angela Davis that spurred a student protest would be restored to full view. The painting, which was made by several students under the supervision of staff, received backlash for the depiction of Ms. Davis, who has ties to controversial political causes.
- A good decision. Sadly, there are forces that are trying to change teaching. We learn from mistakes and from accomplishments. Not addressing both in education is destroying the education system. Extremism is becoming a loud and disruptive occurrence. Education professionals further their education and knowledge of subjects for the purpose of educating students. Educators should be respected and treated as such. Instead, we have a group of people who are not educators trying to oppress the professionals, trying to “whitewash” history. “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” — Dennis Norwood
