Speak Up: School districts develop plans for only one weather day off a year

Posted

As Delawareans prepared for a possibly frigid and stormy winter, school districts have updated their snow day policies to ensure that learning continues uninterrupted. Many have introduced online learning procedures in the case of inclement weather, though students in the First State will be given at least one traditional snow day void of their typical educational responsibilities.

  • Yeah, because Zoom and that online stuff works so great, and kids learn so much. Kids didn’t learn a thing and fell further behind during the school COVID closures and Zoom learning. If they were serious about education, kids would be going to school all year. — Bob Beckman
  • What forecast are you listening to? We, here in Delaware, are supposed to go to 60 by the New Year’s weekend. Ridiculous in winter. We should have cold and snow! — Becky West
  • Because if there’s enough snow to make it a multiday event, I guess employers will tell employees not to work from home to free up computers and bandwidth (where there is bandwidth), so the parents can oversee home learning, right? And, for those businesses who demand employees drive to work, they can just stay home to monitor the Zoom classes, right? But this is necessary because we’ve only conquered flight, gone to space, built tall buildings and done incredible things with the previous snow day policy (e.g., if the buses can’t get to you, go play in the snow). Lesson learned from COVID: no lesson learned. — Jeff Hall

How do you deal with the remnants of the feast?

After Christmas, the question on the minds of many is, “What are we going to do with the leftovers?” From making turkey empanadas to mixing cranberry sauce into your oatmeal to beef repurposed in a lasagna or as barbecue brisket latke sliders, people get creative clearing out the fridge. What’s your favorite solution for dealing with all that food?

  • We had prime rib. With the leftovers, I use a jar of beef gravy and a jar of mushrooms. Simmer. Add leftover beef, cut in squares. When warm, add a dollop of sour cream. Easy beef stroganoff. Delicious. — Denise Sloboda Deskiewicz
