Speak Up: Responses to Kent County building code question

Kent County Levy Court recently held a workshop with the Regional Planning Commission to review major updates to its planning and building codes that will bring the rules up to current standards, remove obsolete uses and add modern ones. The proposed changes include moving all general retail uses in the county’s neighborhood business district zoning to a permitted-use status. It would also lift restrictions on domestic pets and add guidelines for the keeping of backyard chickens, including completely banning roosters apart from commercial farms. What would you like to see added or removed from the Kent County planning and building code?

  • Abolish homeowners associations statewide. — Matthew Fisher
  • Ah, but then the municipalities and counties would have to perform the open-space maintenance, and they don’t want that. That’s why they mandated homeowners associations in the first place. Also, that’s not within the county’s authority, as the state has mandated them. — Jonathan Contant
