Speak Up: Responses on college athletes payment question

Posted

The NCAA has asked an appeals court to reject an effort to get colleges to pay Division I athletes an hourly wage as employees. Lawyers say athletes often need money for expenses, even with scholarships, and that they deserve a share of the funds spent on coaches and facilities and to televise college sports. Lawyers say the pay likely would not match the scholarship amounts and could cause them to be taxed. What’s the solution?

  • Yep. — Parke Green Galleries
  • No. — Diane Butters-Eastburn
  • They already get paid — collect tuition, room and board, tutoring, etc. No extra pay should be given to them. — Sandy Johnson
  • Most of these athletes are on full scholarships, which save them or their parents thousands of dollars. Students who pay their own way and struggle each semester to attend receive nothing. I just don’t think it’s fair to offer an hourly rate for athletes to play a sport. I realize some schools receive millions of dollars from their sport programs. But these pampered, spoiled future millionaires receive enough help. — Stan Sipple
